Hope is defined in the English dictionary as confidence, expectation, optimism, hopeful, courage or potential. The opposite of hope is despair or impossibility. In the book of Jeremiah 29:11NIV version says “for I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you plans to give you a hope and a future.” It’s a combination of excitement and confidence, being certain of good things to come or being optimistic.

The children of Israel through hope in Christ were able to walk through the desert with the hope of getting to their promised land. Abraham the father of faith hoped in Christ and chose to leave his father’s land to unknown place. Hope gives us strength to face our daily challenges because it creates confidence in our hearts that we shall make it.

Most of us Christians lack faith in God, that assurance of the things He has promised us, and that’s why we lack hope. Hope and faith are like brothers they walk together and their mother is love. You can’t have hope if you don’t have faith Hebrews 11:1 faith is being sure of things hoped for and certain of things we don’t see. Our faith is not based on sight but by faith. Hope expects but faith receives faith is sustained by hope. When you have faith hope will sustain you because it gives you assurance of things you cannot see.

The hope we are speaking about is not like that of the world which is based on probability e.g. since you come from the major tribe in Kenya then you will certainly win, it’s not hype that some of the pastors will try to lie to you. But the hope that the Lord speaks about is based on Jesus Christ our hope of salvation. He brought us hope when everything seemed like it was over when the world became desperate after the fall of man and it seemed to be the end of our relationship with God.

He came to reconcile us to our father and now we can now be called His sons not because we deserve it but because of His love for us. He is the hope of our glory because through him we are redeemed and are assured of eternal life. By his blood we are cleansed and made holy, by his stripes we were healed, he is our mediator that when God looks at us he doesn’t see our sinful nature but he sees his son because he died for our sake. He is the hope for those in bondages for he came to set the slaves free Isaiah 61:1-3 he came that we may have life and have it in abundance John 10:10 and through him were made righteous Romans 3:21-24.

Did you know that you can stay for 40 days without food, three days without water and 8 minutes without oxygen but you cannot stay a single second without hope? Situations around us in this world are very discouraging every day we hear of people dying in hunger, accidents, war, family wrangles, political disputes, disappointment from our friends, relationship break ups. Everything seems not to give us hope at all. Hope helps us survive in these circumstances. As the bible says that many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord will deliver us from all. Jesus gives us hope that at the end of this journey we shall inherit the kingdom of God he has promised us a good future and hope for he has good plans for our lives.

He is the only hope that doesn’t disappoint Romans 5:5 his promises are yeah and amen. One day a man planned to kill his cat which had become a nuisance to them by making a lot of noise for them during the night. So he took the cat and put it in a sack and began to beat it up. After striking it up with a heavy stick he went out and threw the sack into a nearby bush. Just when he was about to enter his house he had a cry “meow” the cat was right behind him walking as though nothing had happened. It is said that a cat has 9 hearts before it dies, hope is like that cat when everything goes wrong and nothing doesn’t seem to work for you hope makes you rise again and face them as though nothing happened to you.

The devil owns nothing and so what he does is stealing our trust in God and tries to convince us that it is not possible and once we lose that faith it becomes hard for us to get that which we are trusting God for. Hope hangs around it’s a believer in times of scarcity. It does not hope in chariots Psalms 147: 10-11 its not based on your strength or your ability but in Jesus Christ through whom all things are possible.

In conclusion we are told that Abraham hoped against hope, he hoped against all facts that he and his wife were old and could not get a child. This is the kind of hope that God is pleased of. He delights in those who hope in him and without faith it’s impossible to please God. Hope expects but faith receives Christ is or hope it’s only when we believe in him that we will be able to receive the blessings he has given to us. Everything we need has been given to us but the ticket to get them is faith. Have faith in God pus your hope in Him he will never disappoint you.
We can join together as we sing together the song “My hope is built on nothing less”
